Les Pavillons De Monte Carlo

04/10/2014, Events, Fashion and Style, Monaco, Monte Carlo

Like the old saying goes, follow the signs! I think it’s amusing and ironic how, out of all the inflight movie selections, I ended up choosing to watch the film “Grace of Monaco” starring Nicole Kidman on the flight from JFK to London City airport less than a month ago. The movie made me curious about Monaco and I found myself asking how and why I haven’t gone there. Little did I know that was a sign from the powers that be! Fast forward to yesterday evening (after two plane rides and a chic helicopter transfer), I attended the inauguration of the new Les Pavillons de Monte Carlo, a gorgeous retail complex in the heart of Monte Carlo. HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco cut the ribbon and opened the festivities.

The Monte Carlo Societe des Bains de Mer commissioned architect Richard Martinet, working with Cherif Jahlan, to design the Pavillons de Monte Carlo. For the next four years, the cluster of five modern, off-white aluminium structures inspired by the pebbles found on Riviera beaches will serve as temporary “pop-up” housing for some of the world’s prestigious brands such as Balenciaga, Boucheron, Saint Laurent, Akris, Miu Miu, Sonia Rykiel, Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, Chopard and more.

I’ve never been to Monte Carlo or Monaco before so it was amazing to be welcomed in such spectacular environment. I had so much fun at the event!

After the Valentino show, I went to the Palais Royal to preview 3.1 Phillip Lim’s collaboration with BLITZ Lane Crawford. It’s Phillip’s first collection of exotic skin (American crocodile) handbags.

The collection features three of Phillip’s popular handbag styles, the 3.1 Minute clutch, the Mini Ryder and the Wednesday, made from fine American crocodile skin. Each style is available in two colorways, jet black and jade green. They come in a very limited quantity of no more than 20 pieces per style.

Fur Now

01/10/2014, Ad Campaigns, Fashion and Style, Fur

As many of you already know, I’m a HUGE fan of fur. One of my favorite (and earliest) fur items is a classic, brown beaver fur coat I purchased from a vintage store many, many years ago. Most fur lovers start this way — they begin their love for fur from a fabulous hand-me-down fur coat or a jacket from a family member or they purchase something equally chic from a second-hand store. Fast forward many years later, I must admit I’ve moved on to the way I wear my fur. I try to buy one or two strong fur coats each year. Some of you probably remember this white mink fur coat I bought from Fendi last year. My most recent purchase, as in last month, was a gorgeous, multi-color paneled coat from 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Fur now looks much different than what “fur” used to be. It’s no longer the classic, oversized brown coat that grandmothers used to wear to protect themselves from subzero temperatures. We live in a different generation that celebrates individual and unique personal style and this demands new fur silhouettes and shapes featuring strong, eye-catching colors, textures and different combinations.

Also, fur is now being used in countless different ways. You’ll find fur used in cute accessories like scarves, bow ties and camera straps (like my collaboration with Adrienne Landau), keychains (think Fendi Monster and Fendi Karlito key charms) and sunglasses to leather goods such as wallets, pouches and handbags.

Here are several images from the International Fur Federation’s “Fur Now” campaign to modernize the image of fur and to reach a new, youthful demographic (that’s you… and me! *wink*). They flew me to Paris this summer to see the shoot and I’ll share behind-the-scenes photos on a separate blog post.
