Net-a-Porter & Fashion Blogs

Net-a-Porter & Fashion Blogs

Natalie Massenet, the amazing woman who founded luxury online retailer Net-a-Porter, answered my question at the International Herald Tribune Techno Luxury Conference in Berlin today.

According to Natalie, fashion bloggers and affiliate sites contribute to 5% of their sales.

The Financial Times reported Net-a-Porter's 2008 revenues at £81 million or approx. US$134 million. Five percent is US$6,700,000 in sales alone. Amazing eh?

I honestly thought the percentage would be much higher than 5%... but... it's good to know.

Meanwhile, thanks to Oli of Wednesday, THIS brought a smile to my face.

Thank you so much Natalie (via the IHT and Business of Fashion) for answering my question.

I wish I was in Berlin right now. There's lots of interesting revelations today, especially from Christopher Bailey of Burberry.

Financial Times (UK) + FT Weekend Life & Arts

Financial Times (UK) + FT Weekend Life & Arts

OMG YOU GUYS ALL THE $$$$$$ PEOPLE ARE READING ME RIGHT NOW HAHAHA

There's a lovely article on today's issue of the Financial Times about fashion bloggers and I'm on the front cover of the Life & Arts section with that historical not to mention soon-to-be-iconic photo on the masthead of my blog. The headline? "Editors in drug-crazed front row romp shock with fash fag blog slag."

I'm kidding!

Financial Times FT Weekend Life & Arts

"I'm in the front row with Anna!" The famously formidable editor of US Vogue sharing the front row with a laptop-wielding blogger called Bryanboy? What in the fashion world is happening?

It's the Financial Times y'all, not the Sun or News of the World LOL!

Financial Times FT Weekend Life & Arts

It seems as if the amazing and talented Tavi aka Stylerookie is my partner when it comes to newspapers. Remember the Wall Street Journal piece not too long ago?

Thank you so much FT, Nicola and of course, my friend in London Michael for waking up so early to buy the paper. Can't wait to get it in the mail!

Outsider Peeking In (Bloggers at Shows, Bloggers vs Print Media, Future of Bloggers)

Bryanboy at Gareth PughOutsider Peeking In

I'm cleaning up my email inbox (shock horror! yes, I know) and I thought I'd share some of my answers to a recent interview I did. I thought they were interesting as in "wow, where did that come from" interesting. I could go on and on and on and on forever...

In any case, I doubt my nonsensical statements would hold up in a petri dish so I'll leave it up to you to make what you can out of em...

Bloggers at the Shows:

Fashion (in spite of it being conservative at times) is about pushing the envelope and making a statement.  In this harsh financial climate, designers are finally acknowledging and embracing the internet as part of their marketing strategies, hence the decision to invite bloggers to their shows. For designers to 'test the waters' so to speak is a VERY bold and risky move considering most luxury houses are extremely protective of their image. To put internet personalities and industry novices on the spotlight is something that shouldn't be taken for granted. The value from doing so comes in many forms: from bloggers communicating to their audience about the show to the press generated by the said houses for having bloggers there. Personally, I think it's a smart move and a win-win for everyone. I wouldn't be doing this interview had I not participated during the show season.

How does it feel to being there? I feel thankful and privileged. I have always considered myself as an outsider "peeking in" where I shouldn't; so to be placed in such prime spot alongside - and to personally interact with - industry veterans whose careers you've tracked since childhood is truly an honor. Although the view from the frontline is unbeatable, for a fashion enthusiast such as myself, there's an enormous difference on seeing a designer's creative vision up close in real life versus seeing them online or in print. I have zero qualms about hierarchy or what have you so seating assignment is irrelevant; I'm just happy to be at the shows to witness the magic!

Bloggers vs Print Media:

I don't understand the competition and fight for authority between print journalism and bloggers. They should (and these days, they DO) complement each other. I owe so much of my exposure to print media. Also, I cannot count the number of times I receive magazine cover & editorial "leaks" via email for me to blog about with hopes of stimulating the interest of my readers to buy the said publication. The way I see it is that we all have our own unique voice and perspective in delivering information and opinion to our respective audiences. The beauty of the internet is that it provides anyone and everyone with a platform to be heard. It really is a free for all. Case in point: fashion blogs. Some focus on reportage, some focus on streetstyle images and some even regurgitate what print journalists put out there! And then you have personal journals like mine with an emphasis on fashion whose main goal is to entertain and, hopefully, inspire its readers. I've always considered my site as a very, very light read and that's how my readers like it.

Future of Bloggers:

Cliche as it sounds, we're already seeing what the future is for bloggers: first-hand access to the shows, traditional media/print positions, collaborations with fashion houses. Some are turning into designer muses, some are working with retail stores as guest buyers while some have launched modeling careers. A few bloggers even have their own merchandise and/or clothing lines. It's interesting (at the same time, predictable) how it's all unfolding. Bloggers are, without question, the new celebrities. You've got a bunch of independent, passionate individuals who live and breathe fashion twenty four hours a day and they use the power of the internet to fuel their obsession or express themselves creatively to their audience. It's a great shift compared to the usual, run-of-the-mill manufactured Hollywood suspects, don't you think? In the end, I'm very curious and fascinated how long this 'trend' would last and where it would all go....

Enjoy!

Scott Schuman's Hand

Scott Schuman's Hand

I giggled when I saw these photos from Dolce & Gabbana. We had a little photo op after chatting with the lovely Domenico and Stefano post-show.

Keep an eye out for Scott Schuman's hand. Soo adorable LOL.

Tommy Ton, Garace Dore, Scott Schuman, Bryanboy

Oh to be felt up by a superblogger.  Is he touching my bloated tummy for good luck?

GAYSIAN BUDDHA BUDDHA BOO IS DAT ME CHU? Bing bing bing!

You know, there are people in my country seriously worshiping the ground he stands on. I think I've read a newspaper article a few weeks back by an over enthusiastic local writer who chronicled a big song and dance about meeting him in New York, queuing in line to get an autographed copy of his book... and if I remember it right (feel free to correct me), she explicitly wrote that she arrived there first but she ended up being second in line. Or something like that. So there. He's big in Manille. Heck, he's big everywhere!

Fashion's Use of Social Media and the Internet + Bryanboy at France24

Fashion's Use of Social Media and the Internet at France24

Jessica Michault, the online Style Editor of the International Herald Tribune shared the highlights of the Spring 2010 fashion season at France24 earlier today. I spoke to her on the phone a few days ago where she picked my brain (brain? what brain?) and interviewed me about my thoughts in this whole fashion + social media phenomenon.

Keep an eye out at the video screen behind her. Guess who made a cameo appearance on France24... go bloggers!

Thank you so much Jessica.

PS. I always get chills running down my spine every time I see clips from the gorgeous McQueen show.

Daily Telegraph UK's 20 Best Fashion Blogs

Daily Telegraph UK's 20 Best Fashion Blogs

Thank you so much to the massive Daily Telegraph up there in Britain for including me in their "20 Best Fashion Blogs" list. It's an honor to be part of your favourite online fashion clicks. A few friends made the list as well. Congrats to everyone!

Fashion Bloggers Susie Bubble and Bryanboy

Just to clarify a thing or two (I know, I know): although there are several occasions where I've been fortunate enough to be flown in several cities as a "guest", nobody has flown me to the Spring 2010 shows in New York, Milan and Paris and all expenses were paid for by my humble pocket. While some of my traditional media counterparts flew first or business class, billeted at ultra fabu hotels indulging with 100-euro breakfasts (recession what recession), I for one had to rely on short-let apartments on craigslist and whatnot. I even flew coach from New York to Milan with model Kasia Struss! In Paris, I paid something like 800 euros for 10 nights at a modest but lovely apartment! LOL Let me tell you one thing though -- I'm glad I went for broke and joined the fashion circus this season. I think my investment paid off, otherwise I wouldn't have that gorgeous new banner graphic (which silenced and stunned too many to mention) on top of my website. Hah!

Perhaps next season I'll have a lovely benefactor.... please pretty please?

Now as for me being Christopher Bailey's so-called BFF...... where did that come from?

Thanks again Daily Telegraph!

Bricks Versus Clicks

Bricks Versus Clicks

Just going through my usual dose of fashion news online... D&G shows some major online love, even placing YOOX.com's CEO front row at their show yesterday afternoon.

bryanboy, tommy ton of jakandjil, garancedore

From today's Women's Wear Daily:

Bloggers are now officially front-row material. At least that was the case at the D&G show on Thursday, where Neiman Marcus’ Burt Tansky and Saks’ Steve Sadove and other retail heavyweights were accommodated in the second row, and further back for fashion directors. In front of them were four high-profile bloggers — The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman, Garance Doré of garancedore.fr, Tommy Ton of jakandjil.com and Bryan Boy of bryanboy.com. And to make their job easier, two desks and four laptops were set up right in front of them, entirely operative, as there's no time to waste in cyberspace.

From Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley (via twitter):

  • Arrived in Milan from LA in time to change my shoes and race to DandG. Always weird to see the Saks execs sitting 2nd row in Europe.
  • Well, Saks may be 2nd row at DandG (so am I), but Bergdorf's and Neiman are 3rd. Correlation to their sales? Milan fashion week.
  • Honestly - It's a new world order: federico marchetti, ceo of online retailer Yoox, is front row at D+G. saks, bergdorf, neiman's, aren't.

Ladies and gays, have you seen this hilarious video? Thirteen NYC fashion bloggers, from the lovely Gala of Gala Darling and Sarah of StyleITonline to Yuli Ziv of MyItThings and Jean of StyleObserver, shot this funny video to encourage you and your friends to shop. I think it's awesome. It's sale season right now and there are so many bargains everywhere!

Shopping is great if you have cashmoney and unlimited credit but in these crazy financial times and credit cruch, who's got crispy benjamins or a non-maxed out visa?

The Sartorialist Book by Scott Schuman

The Sartorialist Book by Scott Schuman

For US$16.50, now you too can pre-order Scott Schuman aka The Sartorialist's new self-titled book to be released on August 12, 2009.

Scott Schuman just wanted to take photographs of people on the street who looked great. His now famous blog ('the bellwether American site that turned photo blogging into an art form' - "New York Times") was an attempt to showcase the wonderful and varied sartorial tastes of real people - not only those of the fashion industry. The book is a beautiful anthology of Scott's favourite shots from around the world. They include photographs of well-known fashion figures as well as those shots of the anonymous passerby whose imagination and taste delight the viewer. From the streets of Rio to Bejing, Stockholm to Milan, these are the people that have inspired Scott and in turn, inspired designers and people of all ages, wages and nationalities with an interest in fashion. Intimately designed and created with Scott, the book is a handsome object in its own right, in full colour on hand-picked, quality paper.

The Daily Beast's Fashion Blogger Power List

The Daily Beast's Fashion Blogger Power List

The lovely folks over at Tina Brown's The Daily Beast just published their "Fashion Blogger Power List". Your favourite online heavyweights are there: Fashion Toast, The Sartorialist, Style Bubble, and Tommy of Jak and Jil.

The Daily Beast Fashion Blogger Power List

Believe it or not, I often get bewildered every time media outlets, whether online or in print, publish wonderful things about me. I mean come on --- I could barely put sentences together and my pictures are of mediocre quality to be a proper, proper 'blogger'. But you know what? For some strange reason, people seem to respond to my crazy formula of being fun, frivolous, spontaneous, carefree, post everything raw as it is, warts and all... it somehow works for me! I guess that's proof enough that the internet is so awesome. You can be a cuckoo kooky character living his dream (such as myself) and still have an audience.

Oh and this is the nicest thing someone said about me, EVER.

Thank you, thank you so much The Daily Beast!
