Hardwell At Madison Square Garden

Published by bryanboy

When I first heard that Hardwell is coming to New York City, I blocked that date (November 15) on my calendar and promised myself that there was absolutely no fucking way I’d miss his performance. Many, if not most, of my friends who live in NYC aren’t fans of electronic music so if I had to go to the concert alone by myself, I will, by hook or by crook. Luckily, I made several new friends this summer and we went to the concert this Saturday.

It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE fan of Hardwell. He’s one of my favorite DJs ever. EVER! EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER! The last time I saw him perform was this summer in Ibiza. I saw him twice at Ushuaia and it was worth seeing him. I *live* for his music. I always start my day listening to his recorded sets while in the shower. And then I play his mixes and tracks throughout the day, while I’m running errands, werqing the streets, when I’m on the subway or at the airport. I love feeling that extra kick, that extra rush from playing his tracks.

If I have the opportunity to see my favorite DJs constantly, trust me, I will. I hate having to wait for a major music festival or when they travel here in New York to hear them play. Seeing them perform in huge venue in real life is much, much different than watching them on YouTube or listening to their tracks on my phone. I get chills from hearing music in FULL blast, seeing the light and laser shows, feeling the confetti on my skin and my face after falling from the sky. I love surrendering my body and soul to the music and feeling the same exact feeling as thousands of strangers who are with me at the venue. Good vibes all around. It’s a full-on, feel-good sensory experience that simply doesn’t exist elsewhere.

After the concert, I went backstage at his green room for the post-show celebration.

Hardwell performing at the Madison Square Garden (for the first time) is a HUGE feat, not just for him but also for electronic music. The venue is usually for blockbuster mainstream artists and huge sporting events. To see Hardwell bring a packed house was a major accomplishment. To perform to a full audience dancing and having the time of their lives, at the Madison Square Garden arena, is every artist’s dream. I’m so happy Hardwell fulfilled that.

I loved his three-hour set. It was a fun mix of his classics thrown in with a few new tracks and a handful of different popular electronic anthems. It’s much different than his Ibiza or music festival sets. It felt like a “Best of” performance, after all, his tour is (appropriately) named “I am Hardwell”. He long made his mark in the music scene but this time around, he finally made his mark in a legendary New York City institution. Congratulations!

Begin Desire With Martini

Have you seen Martini’s new ad campaign entitled “Begin Desire”? As many of you guys know, I skipped a day out of my London Fashion Week schedule to go to Rome to see filmmaker Jake Scott direct this very inspirational short film. The story is about an Italian waitress who found a note left by a customer, encouraging her to make changes in her life because she began to desire.

I found this film particularly moving. I may not be a waitress but there was a time in my life that I found myself in a situation similar to hers. Perhaps not just one time but many, many times. One fine example is when I used to live in the Philippines. I cannot say I totally hated it but it felt like I was trapped in a place where I couldn’t evolve. I didn’t want to be this person who spent a huge chunk of his twenties in front of the computer sixteen hours a day with no life outside the website.

And when my previous jobs came by the busload, I found myself criss-crossing continents several times a month (if not several times a week). While I love traveling, I spent more time in the sky than being on land. For years, I was happy on the surface because things went well with my career but I was miserable inside because I couldn’t see my loved ones as often as I should. One has to make sacrifices though. No one in this world deserves to be held back by other people to live a life they want for themselves.

Anyway, that was the past. I like to say that yesterday is a closed book. I obviously have no regrets because that was the way things were. Everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t be here where I am today.. I felt that I had to change my life completely. It obviously began from desiring something that was completely different to what I had. And that’s what I did. I packed my bags, moved to New York and haven’t looked back.

Errand Runner

I love Barbara Bui. I always stock up on her clothes whenever I go to Paris. Her terrific contemporary clothes have the right amount of edge perfect for living in an urban city like NYC. I spent a whole day playing with her Resort 2015 collection running errands around NYC and made this tongue-in-cheek “Errand Runner” video. We even went to Costco!
