MamaLiga Restaurant, St Petersburg

MamaLiga Restaurant, St Petersburg

Are you an adventurous eater? I am. There’s more to life than having a ceasar salad or a club
sandwich. I’m not talking about devouring insects or exotic genitalia but hey, no judgment if you’re into that. What I mean is that I’m someone who likes to try things I’ve never had before. Me and my siblings were raised by my parents to try things at least once. On a side note, read this NY Times article.

I have my limits, of course: you won’t see me eat insects, domestic animals and yes, genitalia though I once had sheep testicles in Iceland many years ago. Depending on my mood, I’ll try it. Ostrich meat? Had it in London. Rabbit? Had it in New York. Frogs, snails, duck fetus (balut)? Done, done and done.

Instead of saying “no” when Alexey asked if I’ve tried Caucasian food before, I played devil’s advocate and channeled the Debbie Dumber in me. “Caucasian food? What’s that? White people food?” was my reply.

So after a disappointing and fruitless trip to a Russian flea market (I was hoping to see kitschy Soviet-era things and Russian antiques but I was greeted with Made-in-USA/Made-in-China second-hand cast-offs), we went to Mamaliga for lunch.

Grand Hotel Europe St Petersburg

Grand Hotel Europe St Petersburg

If you have been to St. Petersburg, you’ll know about the bridge
situation. The city is interconnected with many, many bridges and they
shut them down at certain times of the day (or should I say night) to pave way for incoming
ships. What to do after a night out of clubbing while waiting for one of the bridges to open? Well, Alexey, Dima and I popped by the Grand Hotel Europe for tea at 4:30AM. I’ve stayed here many, many years ago and it’s one of St. Petersburg’s oldest and ultra luxurious
hotels.

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice

One of the things I *always* look forward to eating whenever I'm in Singapore is their famous Hainanese Chicken Rice.

I don't think I could ever get sick of it. I had it every day (via room service) at the St. Regis.

The $64 million question is… who makes the best Hainanese Chicken Rice in Manila? Answers on a postcard…

Upper East Restaurant Makati

Upper East Restaurant

There's quite a bit of internet buzz surrounding Upper East, a new restaurant in Manila.

Upper East Restaurant Makati

Check out their website. For curiosity's sake, I'd like to know who's responsible for the incredibly hilarious write up.

"A word to the wise: UPPER EAST is not for those sans chutzpah and those unwilling to pay for the price for a taste of New York style."

"Just don't expect to dine whenever you want to."

"After all, UPPER EAST is not always open for business. We close our doors when we want to, and we certainly won't wait around for guests who, frankly, need to get a move on. No lunch is served after 1 p.m. and no dinner after 9 p.m."

"UPPER EAST is not for the weak of heart. Expect to be serenaded, as you sip your wine and savor every bite of your meal, by the screaming and ranting of our compulsive Executive Chef for whom incompetence is a crime, set against a sonic backdrop of AHA students sobbing and scrambling to do his bidding."

"UPPER EAST is not for scrooges and stiffs. We tolerate sharing, although it's not exactly de rigeur, is it? As for splitting? The fine is set at P250, not including our wait staff looking down their noses at you."

"This is the UPPER EAST experience. And this is the price you pay… if you can get in."

I bet this is a pisstake. I'm no internet marketing novice (in other words, I'm not new to attention whoring) and this smells like a viral marketing campaign to me.

Whoever made that write-up deserves an award. Hysterical!

A friend said it best on twitter: "I don't think we could have written anything more pretentious if we tried. Really hard. And were draped in fur while doing it."

Late lunch at Sala Bistro

Enough fur drama. I met up with a friend who I haven't seen in years. The ribeye at Sala Bistro was pure perfection.

Lusso Restaurant Greenbelt 5

I don’t know about you but I’m one of those people who always go to the same ‘tried, tested and trusted’ restaurants every time I eat out. It’s not unusual for me to have gone to a place like 10 or more times. I know it’s not good and I’m trying to change that.

Gucci for Pizza Hut?

Gucci for Pizza Hut?

I'm not usually the type of person who makes New Years' resolutions. I think they're rubbish. That's gonna change next year though. I thought I'd give it a shot. My life (or should I say my body) needs some sort of a direction. Let's face it — I'm not getting any younger and the older I get, the fatter I become. My weight is getting ridiculous, which is why I'm gonna try to adopt a vegetarian diet right after Christmas. No more pork, beef, chicken or what have you.

Now. I haven't had pizza in months so I ordered something from Pizza Hut last night while the parentals were gone. Apparently I ordered so much the delivery guy gave me two raffle stubs. Ugh!
