X Marks The Spot

23/04/2014, Alexander Wang, Barbara Bui, Current Affairs, Dubai, Theory

Y’all know me and my taste — I usually love anything AND everything colourful and embellished but lately, I’ve been toning it down big time. I’ve been stockpiling a rather disturbing amount of white items in my closet over the past few months. My obsession started last year but now it’s gone full force. It’s mildly disturbing actually. Whenever I go to stores, I usually make a beeline to the white section if they have it. Before leaving for Dubai, I bought this nifty “X” Alexander Wang sweater. I feel like there’s something chic about white clothes. It makes you look clean, pristine and of course, effortless. Yes, I know the white memo arrived late in my inbox, in any case, I’m loving this ‘new’ look on me.

Hot Desert Knight

20/04/2014, Chanel, Current Affairs, Dubai, Prada, Rolex

I don’t know what possessed me but I bought this really cute Chanel bag when I went to Venice two weeks ago. It was love at first sight. It fits all my life essentials, plus, it’s a classic “non-classic” (since it’s not a 2.55 or what have you) if you know what I mean. Took it out for a spin when I visited the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. This is my second Chanel bag in a span of three months. I’m still recovering from the sticker shock of my Chanel backpack but you know what, when you see something cute such as this, it’s a no-brainer…

Healthy Options

31/03/2014, Acne, Chanel, Current Affairs, Furla

I’ve been integrating exercise into my boring and banal daily routine ever since I got back from Europe almost two weeks ago. By exercise, I mean lifting ten pound weights.

I’m usually the unhealthiest person in the world given my penchant for abusing my body to the extreme. Back in the day, I used to stay up all night, chain-smoking my way well into the wee hours of dawn, surviving on barely four hours of sleep per day. But lately, I’ve been sleeping a minimum of seven hours (it helps when you set a personal curfew of 10:30-11PM), I’ve been waking up before the sun is up and of course, I do my best to hit the treadmill three or four times a week. I do 100 situps twice a day. I’m all about healthy options these days. My former agent used to joke how I’m all about a bowl of sausages for breakfast and he was right. Nowadays, gimme a plain egg white omelette with a side of broccoli. And a glass of grapefruit juice.

My obsession with being fit and healthy started when I saw a gray nose hair a few months ago. It was a wake-up call. It signaled “bitch, you’re old”. The following afternoon, I went to Chanel to see what they have in the stores (I’m gonna fess up and say I was curious about their famous espadrilles), lo and behold I saw this major white sneaker. At first I thought, the shoes are gonna be perfect for the airport. Then I realized I can’t have a multi-logo-a-gogo situation, with what, a Rolex watch, Louis Vuitton trolley and Goyard tote — the lewk screamed Asian at Duty Free.

The lightbulb “aha” moment didn’t happen until I was in Madrid in February when I forgot to bring my trusty old Nikes. I wanted to run one morning and told myself there’s no way in hell I’m gonna run in Chanel but you know what, the more I (or anybody else) tell myself not to do something, the more I end up doing it so I ended up running in my Chanel sneakers. And you know what? It felt good. So now I use my Chanel sneakers as my work out shoe wherever I go. It’s amazing.

Sporty Spice

25/03/2014, Accessories, Current Affairs, Cycling, Prada, Rome, Sports

The first thing that came to my mind when Citi Bikes launched in New York City last year was “THEY’RE GONNA BE THE DEATH OF ME!” I’ve always been petrified of using bicycles in a big city. I think it has something do with my constant fear of being hit by a fast-moving vehicle. It’s already bad that I’ve almost gotten hit MANY, MANY times by a car/bus/truck WHILE WALKING let alone being on a bike. The last time I used a bike was in Paris about a year and a half ago when Rumi and I rented Velibs, not to bike around Paris but to use as props for our blogs…HAH!

Moving along…

I walked past shop with a sign that said “BIKE RENTAL” on our second day in Rome. Mr. Sweden and I went inside. I was curious what their bikes looked like. I was amazed how they have mini bikes, perfect for my petite self. After two days of Uber-ing and cabbing around Rome, I thought it would be refreshing to channel my inner Sporty Spice, rent a bike for an hour or two, see where our bikes lead us. Lo and behold we ended biking for four hours that day, with a quick pit stop at our hotel for an outfit change.

We loved biking so much we decided to come back to the same shop the following morning to do it again but alas, the shop was closed. After half an hour, I found another company and we rented slightly bigger bikes, not for a few hours but for a few days!

In a span of four days, I biked approximately 150 kilometers. We literally biked EVERYWHERE in Rome. EVERYWHERE! EVERYDAY!For hours each day. Right down to our last day. We’d start a little bit after sunrise and go back to the hotel by dusk. Saw most of the tourist spots and of course, we even went to the city outskirts. We also biked through a huge part of Appia Antica, one of the oldest, most important roads in ancient Rome.

Who knew there was a cyclist in me? I’m shocked! Will I do it again? Hell yes. I think I found a new love. This is so much better than Soul Cycle (which I, agonizingly if I may add, tried once and never went back)!

Springtime Listening

23/03/2014, Balenciaga, Chanel, Current Affairs, Emporio Armani, Fendi, Givenchy, Music

I love a good, uplifting anthem. I really do. I find it fascinating how the people close to me often question my taste in music but what can I do? I don’t like to listen to songs that make me want to kill myself or tracks that me depressed. I like happy tunes, you know, tunes I can shake my booty to. Here are some of my favourite tracks of the moment. I like to play them on autorepeat whenever I’m out and about.

Is anyone coming to Ultra Miami next weekend? I’m THIS close to buying a plane ticket but I don’t want to go there alone. Pop me an email… maybe I’ll consider.

Resurrection

17/03/2014, Current Affairs, Prada

Resurrection. As you can tell from my other social media outlets, namely Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, I’m still alive and I’ve been everywhere!

Bryanboy's resurrection.

I know I took a (rather) long hiatus from the blog for various reasons beyond my control. Endless back-to-back trips happened — Costa Rica, San Francisco, Dubai, Florence, a quick jaunt to Madrid, followed by the usual Fashion Month festivities in New York, Milan, Paris, my week-long holiday in Rome followed by a pit stop in Stockholm and lastly, Madrid. In between New York and Madrid, before the European Collections started, my laptop crashed, effectively disconnecting me from the wired world of the interwebs.

Anyhoo, I’m finally back home, in my apartment, armed with a new laptop. I can’t wait to share to you all my adventures.

Givenchy Roses

13/01/2014, Current Affairs, Florence, Givenchy

I know, I know. The entire solar system and the universe (myself included) castigated Kim Kardashian for wearing that infamous Givenchy roses sofa lewk to last year’s Costume Institute Gala yet here I am, drawn to the same, well, ok, similar, floral situation. I’m currently bored of all my clothes and I need a few exciting things. Now that new merchandise are slowly trickling in at the stores, a mini Givenchy shopping spree at Luisa Via Roma is well-deserved and overdue. I can’t wait to take these items apart and wear them individually. I may have to take the shorts to a tailor when I go back home — crucial to take an inch or two off.

Christopher Kane Lace Sweatshirt

29/12/2013, Christopher Kane, Costa Rica, Current Affairs, Jenni Kayne

I’m so excited that the Resort collections have finally hit the stores. I picked up this Christopher Kane sweatshirt before leaving NYC… perfect for cool mornings here in Costa Rica. I know it’s been a mild winter back home and to be honest, I’m somewhat dreading the return back. We’re having a fabulous time under the sun for the past few days. I don’t think I’m ready to ditch my Missoni swimming trunks to wear fur again…

Frends Zone

27/12/2013, Accessories, Costa Rica, Current Affairs, Equipment, See by Chloe

Have you downloaded Beyonce’s latest album? I bought it last week on iTunes and have been listening to it non-stop with my gold Frends headphones (Frends headphones, a gift from Rebecca Minkoff who collaborated with them. I think it’s amazing what she did — dropped a major album out of NOWHERE and of course, all 17 music videos at the same time. Now that’s groundbreaking! Only Queen Bey could pull that shit off! Most artists, since the time of the dinosaurs, did the usual formula of sending out teasers, releasing a music video throughout a certain time span to promote the album but not Beyonce. My favourite track? Pretty Hurts.

Pura Vida, Costa Rica!

27/12/2013, Costa Rica, Current Affairs

Pura Vida, Costa Rica! It’s time to embark on another adventure! 2013 was another banner year and, for the final stretch, I thought I’d go somewhere new and exciting — Costa Rica! I know I’m a city boy by heart but it’s also refreshing to take the inner nature lover out of me from time to time. I flew to San Jose on Christmas Day with people close to my heart. We’ll spend the next few days exploring some parts of this beautiful country. I’m usually the well-organized, anal-retentive traveler but this time around, I’ve decided to just go and explore, with no game plan whatsoever. All we have is a rented house in the middle of the rain forest. We’ll see where the roads (and my camera) lead us…

It’s exciting, no? In this day and age of high standards and convenience, it’s easy to forget the essence of travel. It’s sad that over the years, we’ve spoiled ourselves with such high standards that we end up stopping ourselves from visiting certain places. I think it’s important to get lost to see what’s out there. The only thing that matters is that you come back alive to share your experiences.
