There are very few reasons for a downtown guy like myself to head uptown — Barney’s, Bergdorf’s, the shops along Madison Ave and of course, good causes. For instance, cancer-related causes have a special place in my heart. I’ve lost my aunt Cynthia to the disease a few years ago. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, along with the fabulous folks at Max Mara, recently held their annual Fall Party at the super chic Four Seasons Restaurant. I had so much fun at the event. Thank you Max Mara for the experience!

Luisa via Roma recently collaborated with twenty fashion brands (from Antonio Marras and Balmain to Valentino and Theysken’s Theory) to customize a pug dog doll produced by Steiff. They’ve invited select fashion bloggers to ‘sponsor’ each each pug; my friends Tina and Kelly of the Bag Snob is currently sponsoring the Balmain pug. I, on the other hand, cherry-picked the most ornate pug of them all: Francois by Mary Katrantzou.

I’m not gonna deny — it’s been a wonderful, wonderful festive year. I’ve received lots of heart-stopping tokens and presents. Some of them are material presents but most of the terrific gifts I received the past eleven months are experiences that I’ll forever cherish in my head and my heart.
Sadly it’s not the case with a lot of people around the world. Not many people are as lucky as myself (and YOU) for that matter.
In the spirit of the holiday season, I’d like to request that a few minutes of your time and a donate few dollars out of your pockets. I’m sure you’ve overspent this month buying gifts for everyone that you know. But then again, you can always take a small slice from next month’s Starbucks budget and make the world a better place. Be a superhero and check out these charitable institutions I’ve been supporting over the years. Any help is appreciated, whether it’s five dollars or a thousand.

The White Elephant in the Room
I recently had a heated discussion with a friend about charitable giving.
Part of the problem with "giving" is that in most cases, it is what it is: hand-to-mouth. Although it's good for the short term, in my opinion, it's NOT sustainable in the long run.
I admire institutions such as Trickle Up (who I've been supporting for years) and Kiva. They both provide tools and resources to the less fortunate to start microenterprises which, in return, enable them to stand on their own two feet, thus eliminating the endless (and unnecessary) cycle of relying on handouts.
Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, call it whatever you want. I'm sure many of you have been shopping like crazy the past few days. But please take time to check out those two sites I mentioned and donate any amount.
