The first thing that came to my mind when Citi Bikes launched in New York City last year was “THEY’RE GONNA BE THE DEATH OF ME!” I’ve always been petrified of using bicycles in a big city. I think it has something do with my constant fear of being hit by a fast-moving vehicle. It’s already bad that I’ve almost gotten hit MANY, MANY times by a car/bus/truck WHILE WALKING let alone being on a bike. The last time I used a bike was in Paris about a year and a half ago when Rumi and I rented Velibs, not to bike around Paris but to use as props for our blogs…HAH!
I walked past shop with a sign that said “BIKE RENTAL” on our second day in Rome. Mr. Sweden and I went inside. I was curious what their bikes looked like. I was amazed how they have mini bikes, perfect for my petite self. After two days of Uber-ing and cabbing around Rome, I thought it would be refreshing to channel my inner Sporty Spice, rent a bike for an hour or two, see where our bikes lead us. Lo and behold we ended biking for four hours that day, with a quick pit stop at our hotel for an outfit change.
We loved biking so much we decided to come back to the same shop the following morning to do it again but alas, the shop was closed. After half an hour, I found another company and we rented slightly bigger bikes, not for a few hours but for a few days!
In a span of four days, I biked approximately 150 kilometers. We literally biked EVERYWHERE in Rome. EVERYWHERE! EVERYDAY!For hours each day. Right down to our last day. We’d start a little bit after sunrise and go back to the hotel by dusk. Saw most of the tourist spots and of course, we even went to the city outskirts. We also biked through a huge part of Appia Antica, one of the oldest, most important roads in ancient Rome.
Who knew there was a cyclist in me? I’m shocked! Will I do it again? Hell yes. I think I found a new love. This is so much better than Soul Cycle (which I, agonizingly if I may add, tried once and never went back)!
