Debbie Downer No More

Debbie Downer No More

I’m usually a cheerful, giddy, happy person and I don’t like being a Debbie Downer but my god, what a bloody week.

Bryanboy

It started last weekend. Had lots of ups, lots of downs.... it's like taking a ride on this crazy emotional rollercoaster. Perhaps the universe is playing with my emotions to make me tougher? It’s hard to describe how I feel. I'll hear unpleasant news in the morning then I'll get emails mid-day with mindblowing good news then at night I'll hear something very depressing. It's not good because all these feelings and emotions get in the way of my obligations. It's affecting my productivity. It's affecting my work. Never in my life I've felt so anxious, in love (yes -- don't ask), excited, tired, lonely, exhausted, paranoid, thrilled, worried, happy, etc. All in the past few days.

I'm SO over it now. OH. VAH. I want my sanity back!

It's early Sunday morning and starting today, I'm no longer allowing my emotions to get in the way of what I want (and have) to do.

Buckle up folks. This blogger is going full throttle. BIG things are about to come.

Collezione C2 and Philippine Map

Collezione C2 and Philippine Map

I came across THIS article on the Philippine Daily Inquirer about Filipino mass-chain label "Collezione C2" and designer Rhett Eala. It's a fairly successful brand here in the Philippines known for the use of the Philippine map on its clothes.

Collezione C2

Upon reading the article further, this struck a nerve:

Qua did the unprecedented by having the Philippine map patented a few years ago, giving C2 exclusive legal rights to put the map on articles of clothing.

But this hasn’t stopped copycats from following their lead. Rather than test the law by hailing wannabes to court, Qua, for now, at least, would rather let C2’s quality and range of offerings do the talking.

My first reaction was: ARE THEY SERIOUS?

Now I'm all for patriotism, and promoting the Philippines, nationalism chuchubells but I feel uneasy knowing a private individual or company get EXCLUSIVE rights to use the national flag, country outline or map on clothes or any merchandise for that matter. The design is universally used by others as part of a national identity.

If they modified the design of the map, added unique characteristics to it, then yes, why not? Because the new design is a variation...

Now I'm no expert in copyright, trademark or patent issues but to my knowledge, you cannot patent a design. You may patent inventions, yes, but design marks, no. You may only copyright it or trademark it. There's a difference between patents and trademarks.

Collezione C2 Philippine MapI did a very quick search at the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines website where I found a pending TRADEMARK application by a certain "Ramesh Mirpuri" about the use of the Philippine map on apparel and garments.

The application was filed on June 19, 2009. The image you see on the right is what they've applied for. There's nothing unique to it. It's not even a variation of the Philippine map. It is what it is!

You may search using this page. You'll see there are 16 applications under the search term "Philippine Map". Most of the results have modified version of the map or the map itself is part of something else.

It would be interesting to see what happens to this application. Patented a few years ago? O RLY?

According to the IPO website, Rule 101 of the Rules& Regulations

RULE 101.            Registrability. — A mark cannot be registered if it:

(a) Consists of immoral, deceptive or scandalous matter, or matter which may disparage or falsely suggest a connection with persons, living or dead, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols, or bring them into contempt or disrepute;

(b) Consists of the flag or coat of arms or other insignia of the Philippines or any of its political subdivisions, or of any foreign nation, or any simulation thereof;

Now I'm not sure whether Ramesh Mirpuri is related to Collezione C2 or Henry Qua but that's the first thing I found. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or if I'm missing out on anything. I can't be bothered spending more time on this.

I dunno. What do you all think? I'm not hatin'. Personally I like the idea of using national symbols to promote patriotism but to try to get exclusivity on something that belongs to the public? Hmm...

Just wondering.

Алёна Долецкая - Истории в Деталях

My knowledge of Russian is very limited but I love this video interview of Vogue Russia's Aliona Doletskaya at Истории в Деталях (History in Details).

I wish some generous soul put English subtitles to it but oh well.

Rest in Peace My Dear Friend, Daul Kim

Rest in Peace My Dear Friend, Daul Kim

I'm sure many of you are just as devastated as I am when news reports came in about Daul.

We started talking online in February and after many months of endless conversations, facebook chats, we met for the first time in September during the spring 2010 shows in Milan. She invited me to her hotel room where we hung out for hours, just the two of us. She had a TV show in Korea where she takes video footage of herself and her favourite people. We played dress up -- she made me wear her clothes, we played with her furs (her Isabel Marant is gorgeous), chomped on toblerone, etc. We talked about Asians and racism in fashion, gossiped about models and mean casting directors, etc. Good times all in all. I could've spent the night in her hotel but I didn't bring any clean clothes with me and we both have shows in the morning. We agreed to meet up at D&G backstage the next day.

Daul and her video camera, just before me doing the whole "Hey Korea, we're here at D&G, I love you all" moment haha.

Daul Kim

I've been crying the whole day. I just can't believe she's gone! Soo young and soo soon...

I feel terrible because we both talk about our personal problems but I didn't know it's going to end this way. I feel like I could have done something and I could've been there for her more. The last time we talked was last week.

She regularly comments on my facebook wall. Just this Tuesday, she replied to my status message.

I don't go as much on facebook chat because every time I go there, 200 chat windows show up with everyone in the world wanting to get a hold of me... I should have gone online when she posted that reply and took it as a sign that she wanted to talk!

Anyway, I digress.

Daul, I really miss you so much. I'll forever cherish our moments. You'll never be forgotten.

From one fur hag to another, I promise to wear my furs, when I have the opportunity (and where it's cold), in YOUR honor.

I love you Daul. So much.

Cross Your Fingers, Your Legs and Your Toes

Cross Your Fingers, Your Legs and Your Toes

Hmmm. Five years ago (how fast time flies eh -- I missed my anniversary last month), I started this blog for a reason. I went to Moscow and St. Petersburg for a vacation and I wanted an online platform where I can update my family and friends with my whereabouts. Little did I know it's going to evolve into the website that it is right now. Because of this, I owe pretty much most of my blessings to Russia and that magical country will always be in my heart.

I guess only time will tell if I go full-circle or not. Remember my logo mania days? Haha! ;)

There are angels out there making some magic happen, I think. Fingers crossed.

Hold Up! Easy There, Tiger.

Hold Up! Easy There, Tiger.

First of all, thank you so much for visiting my humble website.

bryanboy

In light of recent events, especially with the overwhelming but amazing (not to mention, life-changing) press I've received over the past few weeks, I'd like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that I'm (still) a solo operation; a one-man internet circus. I do not have staff working for me and the sixteen hours I spend in front of the computer, yes, in my bedroom, each day are simply not enough to go through everything on my plate. I humbly request that you please understand... and bear with me over the next few days as I work even harder.

With that being said, do keep your messages coming. I may not reply to them individually but I assure you that if there's anything that requires a 'call to action' on my part, I'll get to it as soon as I'm able to.

I know we all have deadlines but please keep in mind that I have my own, too. Just hang in there, for me, please!

I do apologize, with much, mucho sincerity, for any delays from my part.

Once again, thank you SO much for understanding and thank you in advance for your support.

I love you all!

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Yves Saint Laurent Shoes

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's Yves Saint Laurent Shoes

Shock horror! Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is the last person in the world I'd associate with Yves Saint Laurent. GMA? YSL? It's the end of the world as we know it!

Here's a file (November 14) photo of her sporting a pair of last season YSL Cage 110 booties.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo shoes

You may now buy them on sale at My Theresa for €625 (original retail price of 890 euros).

Hilarious. Good on GMA though.

Net-a-Porter & Fashion Blogs

Net-a-Porter & Fashion Blogs

Natalie Massenet, the amazing woman who founded luxury online retailer Net-a-Porter, answered my question at the International Herald Tribune Techno Luxury Conference in Berlin today.

According to Natalie, fashion bloggers and affiliate sites contribute to 5% of their sales.

The Financial Times reported Net-a-Porter's 2008 revenues at £81 million or approx. US$134 million. Five percent is US$6,700,000 in sales alone. Amazing eh?

I honestly thought the percentage would be much higher than 5%... but... it's good to know.

Meanwhile, thanks to Oli of Wednesday, THIS brought a smile to my face.

Thank you so much Natalie (via the IHT and Business of Fashion) for answering my question.

I wish I was in Berlin right now. There's lots of interesting revelations today, especially from Christopher Bailey of Burberry.

International Herald Tribune

International Herald Tribune

Be sure to buy today's copy of the International Herald Tribune, just in time for the Techno Luxury Conference in Berlin. There's a great article written by Jessica Michault (who recently interviewed me) about fashion and social media. Domenico Dolce said something on point -- "the web, for luxury brands, is not the future but the present."

International Herald Tribune

From Couture to Conversation

Thank GOD for Press Display where you can buy the latest digital versions of most newspapers worldwide. They don't sell the IHT and international newspapers (other than USA Today) at the newstands here in Manila and you can only get them, if you're lucky, at hotels.

Now I'm gonna ask a friend or two to send me the hard copy by post...

Thank you so much Jessica and the IHT for the mention.

Quotable Quotes: Pete Cashmore of Mashable

Pete Cashmore MashableQuotable Quotes: Pete Cashmore of Mashable

I read THIS article written by Pete Cashmore, CEO of the highly-influential social networking blog, Mashable, on CNN and I thought this part was interesting:
-----

We're living at a time when attention is the new currency: With hundreds of TV channels, billions of Web sites, podcasts, radio shows, music downloads and social networking, our attention is more fragmented than ever before.

Those who insert themselves into as many channels as possible look set to capture the most value. They'll be the richest, the most successful, the most connected, capable and influential among us. We're all publishers now, and the more we publish, the more valuable connections we'll make.

Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Foursquare, Fitbit and the SenseCam give us a simple choice: participate or fade into a lonely obscurity.

Agree or disagree?

2009 International Herald Tribune Techno Luxury Conference Berlin

2009 IHT Techno Luxury Conference

As you know, the International Herald Tribune Techno Luxury Conference in Berlin begins tomorrow, November 17.

Do you have a question for Suzy Menkes, Natalie Massenet (Net-a-Porter), Christopher Bailey (Burberry), Frida Giannini (Gucci) or Tomas Maier (Bottega Veneta)?

The IHT welcomes you to send your questions via twitter. Send them to @ihtluxury and don't forget to use the #techlux hash tag.

For more information, visit http://www.twitter.com/ihtluxury or http://www.wednesday-london.com for up-to-the-minute twitter coverage of the event.

As one of the world's largest purveyors of luxury goods online, I'm very curious as to how much of Net-a-Porter's sales can be attributed to fashion blogs and/or third-party affiliate sites. I know online retailers have sophisticated tracking tools that identify referring URLs, clickthroughs, revenue and more...
